Trump Announces South Korean Investment in Alaska LNG Project
US President Donald Trump announced on September 30 that South Korea would invest $54 billion in an Alaska LNG project as part of its commitment to invest $200 billion in US energy projects. The investment is a significant boost for Alaska, which has long been seeking to develop its natural gas resources.
The project involves building an 807-mile pipeline to carry natural gas from the North Slope to a liquefaction facility for shipment to the Asian market. Trump said the project could transport 3.9 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day and produce up to 20 million metric tons of LNG annually, solidifying the US as the world's largest LNG producer.
The investment is part of a larger agreement between South Korea and the US, under which South Korea pledged $350 billion in US investments in exchange for Washington lowering tariffs on Korean goods from 25% to 15%. The package includes $200 billion in strategic investments and another $150 billion earmarked for shipbuilding.
