Trump EPA Rollback Lets New Gas Turbines Dodge Carbon Capture Deadline
The Trump administration has finalized a partial repeal of Biden-era carbon rules for power plants, giving new natural gas-fired turbines a break from a 2032 deadline to install carbon capture systems.
According to government modeling, coal is expected to gain the most from this rollback, and as a result, natural gas supply will increase while LNG demand tightens the market. New natural gas turbines are now exempted from the requirement to meet the 2032 carbon capture target.
The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) move is expected to lower Henry Hub prices. The EPA models suggest that coal will be kept online, specifically 68 GW of it, as a result of this reversal.
