US President Donald Trump has escalated his rhetoric on the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global energy trade. In an event in New York on Friday, he said that after defeating Iran, which is 'being very badly defeated', he will declare the Strait of Hormuz a US territory.

'After we finish defeating Iran, pretty soon I'll be declaring the Strait of Hormuz a territory of the United States,' Trump said, according to Al Jazeera. He did not explain how this move would be carried out.

The Strait of Hormuz is crucial for global energy trade, with about 20% of the world's oil and LNG supplies passing through it. Any long disruption could push energy prices higher and affect economies worldwide.
