Turkey, UN Restart Black Sea Ceasefire Talks Amid Grain Export Crisis

Turkey and the UN are coordinating efforts to restart talks between Ukraine and Russia over a Black Sea ceasefire, aimed at protecting grain shipments and stabilizing global food prices.

The initiative, which has its roots in a closed-door meeting during the UN General Assembly in late September, seeks to guarantee free commercial shipping and port safety for both countries.

This effort is particularly timely given that Ukraine and Russia account for over 25% of global wheat exports, with intensified attacks on ports pushing wheat futures to a three-year high in August.

The meeting's success is modeled after the 2022 Black Sea Grain Initiative, which established a safe corridor for grain and fertilizer exports from Ukrainian ports during a rare example of an effective ceasefire since Russia's full-scale invasion.
