US Offers Official Response to Iran's War Proposal
Iran has indicated it received an official US response to its latest proposal to end the seven-month war. The officials did not reveal what was in the response, but Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi briefed President Masoud Pezeshkian on his return from New York. In a meeting, Pezeshkian emphasized that 'the agreement must now be based on a win-win strategy.'
Araghchi traveled to the UN General Assembly last week and met with Qatari and Pakistani mediators. An official briefed on the talks said the sides largely agree about the steps needed but disagree about the order in which to take them.
Iran wants control over the Strait of Hormuz, the world's most important oil shipping route, in an eventual deal. The US has responded with a counterblockade of Iranian ports to prevent Tehran from exporting its oil.
