US Stocks Close Mixed as Oil Prices Fall Amid Iran Talks
The US stock market closed in mixed fashion on Wednesday, as the S&P 500 finished flat near the 7,700 level and the Nasdaq rose 0.45% to break its all-time high for the second consecutive day.
Materials stocks surged 2%, while consumer staples gained 1%. However, communication services and financial stocks declined by 1% each.
The market was bolstered by falling oil prices following the resumption of talks between the United States and Iran. US President Trump stated that he held productive talks with the Iranian delegation on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, easing concerns over supply instability in the Middle East.
Federal Reserve officials emphasized the need for a tight monetary stance to stabilize inflation, which has led to heightened concerns over prolonged high interest rates and sluggish performance from bank stocks.
