Venezuela's Revival Threatens Canada's Oil Dominance
Venezuela's oil industry revival poses a threat to Canada's dominant position as the largest supplier of crude oil to the United States, particularly in the U.S. Gulf Coast.
The country has the world's largest proven oil reserves, estimated at over 300 billion barrels, and its heavy crude production could increase competition for Canadian producers in U.S. refineries designed to process heavy oil.
Canadian oil dominates refineries in the U.S. Midwest, but Venezuelan crude can be easily processed by Gulf Coast refineries, which have historically handled Venezuelan heavy oil.
A significant increase in Venezuelan production could put downward pressure on the price American refiners are willing to pay for Canadian heavy oil, reducing Canadian producers' revenues by about $2 billion annually per dollar of discount.
