Abstract Ethereum Layer 2 to Shut Down on December 15

Abstract, the Ethereum Layer 2 network developed by Pudgy Penguins' parent company Igloo Inc., will shut down on December 15. The team announced that any remaining funds on the chain after this date will become inaccessible. Launched in January 2025, Abstract aimed to bring consumer crypto to everyday users, attracting over 400,000 users and partnerships with brands like Red Bull Racing and Disney.

The network focused on mass-market adoption through apps, games, and brand experiences, rather than the decentralized finance (DeFi) approach of its competitors. Despite deploying over 144 unique apps and launching the Abstract Global Wallet, the team cited stagnant growth due to a restricted DeFi ecosystem, thin liquidity, minimal institutional crossover, and a limited budget compared to rivals.

Users are urged to migrate their assets using the Migration Hub at migrate.abs.xyz or the native bridge at native-bridge.abs.xyz, which includes a three-hour delay. The team warned users to be cautious of impersonators and fake migration sites, advising them to verify any links through official channels before connecting their wallets.

The shutdown follows Blast’s announcement to close its Ethereum Layer 2 by October 26, marking the second Ethereum scaling network in a week to cease operations. Abstract had initially shown strong early traction with 105,000 active addresses, but this did not translate into a self-sustaining economy, highlighting the challenges faced by consumer-focused chains.
