Beyond Wallet Balances: The Evolving Landscape of Crypto Wealth
Crypto wealth is no longer defined solely by wallet balances. The rise of exchange-traded funds (ETFs), staking, decentralized finance (DeFi), and tokenized investments has created multiple layers of ownership and exposure.
Wallet balances only provide a partial picture of an investor's crypto holdings. A single address can represent hundreds of wallets controlled by one person, while exchanges can hold assets for millions of customers in relatively few addresses.
ETFs have changed how investors obtain crypto exposure. When purchasing a Bitcoin ETF, investors own shares in an investment product rather than BTC in a personal wallet. The underlying Bitcoin is held through institutional custody arrangements, and the investor's economic exposure appears in a brokerage account.
Crypto wealth can accumulate without simply waiting for token prices to increase. Proof-of-stake networks allow holders to stake assets and receive rewards, while DeFi protocols generate lending interest, trading fees, and liquidity-provider rewards. These positions may involve liquid-staking tokens, lending receipts, or smart-contract deposits rather than ordinary wallet balances.
Tokenization is making the distinction even more complicated. On September 24, ARK Invest and Securitize announced the tokenization of the ARK Venture Fund, initially on Ethereum. Eligible investors can obtain blockchain-based exposure to a portfolio containing private and public technology companies without holding cryptocurrencies directly.
