Binance Users Boost Bitcoin Holdings in October Amid Asset Shifts
Binance users increased their Bitcoin holdings by 0.91% in October, according to the exchange's latest proof-of-reserves snapshot. User BTC balances rose to 688,573 BTC, up 6,217 BTC from September 1. This increase occurred as Bitcoin traded between $85,000 and $87,000 in early October, with the total crypto market capitalization reaching $2.99 trillion in September.
In contrast, Ethereum holdings on Binance fell 4.61% to 3.799 million ETH, while USDT and BNB balances also declined by 0.87% and 0.77%, respectively. These changes suggest a selective shift in asset composition among exchange users rather than a uniform trend across all major cryptocurrencies.
The decline in USDT holdings, which are often used for trading liquidity, does not necessarily indicate capital leaving crypto markets. The proof-of-reserves system allows users to verify their account balances through a Merkle Tree and zk-SNARK-based process, ensuring transparency.
Binance's reserves are intended to back user assets on a 1:1 basis, though the monthly snapshots provide only a point-in-time measurement. The next snapshot will reveal whether the Bitcoin increase persists or reverses, with ongoing regulatory scrutiny in Europe adding importance to reserve disclosures under the MiCA framework.
