BIS Taps XRP Ledger for Official Statistics Tamper-Resistance
The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has successfully tested the XRP Ledger as a tool for making official statistics tamper-resistant. According to a working paper published on September 2, BIS used XRPL to verify data origin and integrity by anchoring cryptographic fingerprints of official datasets directly onto the ledger.
The test aimed to address a gap in SDMX, the standard international organization that exchanges official economic and financial statistics. Researchers generated a cryptographic fingerprint for each dataset using SHA3-512 hashing and anchored the resulting root value on XRPL.
A signed W3C Verifiable Credential identifies the publisher, allowing users to verify authorship and integrity with a single ledger lookup. Only the fingerprints get recorded on-chain, preserving confidentiality while allowing one ledger entry to cover thousands of datasets simultaneously.
