Bitcoin.de Seeks Alternatives After German Regulator Rejects MiCA Application
Bitcoin Group SE is exploring alternative ways to operate its bitcoin.de platform after Germany’s financial regulator, BaFin, rejected an authorization application filed by its banking subsidiary, futurum bank AG, under the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). The company described the decision as a setback but noted that it had anticipated the possibility of refusal. Bitcoin Group SE is now reviewing the ruling and considering either filing an objection or submitting a new application in the future.
In parallel, the firm is working to restart trading through regulated partners as quickly as possible. Trading on bitcoin.de has been largely suspended since June 12, as the platform shifted custody infrastructure and switched off its prior trading system ahead of a planned relaunch. The company emphasized that its priority is to implement an alternative operating model and keep customers informed about the next steps.
Bitcoin.de initially began as a peer-to-peer marketplace but has since evolved into a brokerage platform. The company had planned to relaunch the platform with a broader product offering, including more than 100 cryptocurrencies, crypto swaps, and staking. However, the launch was postponed while futurum bank AG awaited MiCA authorization. The regulatory refusal has added uncertainty to the timeline for resuming trading activities.
For investors and users, the key question now is whether the alternative operating model will enable trading to resume quickly and under what terms. The company’s ability to navigate regulatory challenges and find interim pathways will be crucial in determining the pace of recovery for the platform.
