Bitcoin Miners Face Brutal Penalty for Dishonest Behavior

Ripple's former CTO David Schwartz has highlighted the potential consequences of dishonest Bitcoin mining behavior.

He pointed out that if a mining cartel attempted to double-spend, economic nodes could fork the chain and change the mining algorithm, rendering expensive ASIC rigs useless - effectively turning them into space heaters.

This is because mining nodes are incentivized to be honest due to the potential consequences of being caught in the act. If they engage in malicious behavior, their equipment becomes worthless and no longer earns anything.

Schwartz made these comments in response to a question about whether most mining nodes behave honestly. He emphasized that the network relies on an 'honest majority' to function correctly.
