Bitcoin Outperforms Coinbase Stock in Long-Term Investment Comparison
Over the past year, Coinbase's stock has underperformed Bitcoin significantly. While Bitcoin dropped 30%, Coinbase shares fell 51%, turning a $10,000 investment into $4,900 compared to $7,000 for Bitcoin. The trend is even more pronounced over five years, with Coinbase shares down 21% while Bitcoin gained 67%.
The performance gap can be attributed to the different nature of the investments. Bitcoin is a single asset, while Coinbase is a business with operational costs, competition, and regulatory scrutiny. These factors make Coinbase's stock more volatile. For instance, Coinbase's revenue depends on trading activity, which typically declines when cryptocurrency prices fall.
Historically, Coinbase offered convenience for retirement investors, as its shares could be included in IRAs or brokerage accounts. However, the introduction of spot Bitcoin ETFs has eroded this advantage. These funds allow investors to gain Bitcoin exposure within the same accounts that hold Coinbase shares, without the need for self-custody wallets.
Given the current performance, Bitcoin appears to be the better option for owning cryptocurrency. It has lost less over the past year, gained value over the last five years, and carries no associated business risks. For retirement accounts, spot Bitcoin ETFs now offer the benefits of Bitcoin without the custody complications that made Coinbase appealing in the past.
