Bitcoin experienced a sharp drop of nearly $2,000 in just 20 minutes on October 6, 2026, causing a cascade of liquidations totaling around $400 million in leveraged long positions. The cryptocurrency fell from approximately $71,765 to $67,895, its lowest point since April of the same year.

According to data from Coinglass, about $394 million in positions were liquidated within an hour, with $384 million coming from long positions. Bitcoin traders faced the largest losses, with about $209 million liquidated, followed by Ethereum at $87 million, Solana at $27 million, and XRP at $11 million. Over a 24-hour window, total liquidations across the market reached approximately $1.02 billion, primarily driven by longs.

The selloff began with a technical breakdown as Bitcoin slipped below key on-chain support levels. A small corporate sale by Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, added to the downward pressure. The company sold 32 BTC worth about $2.5 million to fund dividend payments. Broader macroeconomic factors, including strong labor market readings and rising energy prices, also contributed to the decline.

This event follows a familiar pattern in the crypto market, where leveraged positions in perpetual futures can amplify ordinary declines. The fall to $67,895 suggests the market has given back a significant portion of its gains from the previous months. For spot holders, such events are painful but manageable, while leveraged traders must carefully manage position sizing and margin buffers to avoid being wiped out.
