Bitwise Adds Staking Mechanics to Spot Ethereum ETF Filing

Bitwise has amended its filing for its spot Ethereum ETF to include details on staking mechanics and validator operations. This move is significant as it addresses one of the biggest unresolved questions around spot Ethereum ETFs: how they would handle staking rewards.

Ethereum staking is a crucial aspect of the asset's investment case, as it allows holders to secure the network and earn protocol rewards. However, with a spot Ethereum ETF, investors may not receive these rewards, which could make the product less attractive compared to direct ETH ownership.

Bitwise's amended filing adds language around slashing risk, staking-yield accounting, and validator operations, which would need to be disclosed clearly in an ETF structure. The SEC has yet to approve staking for spot Ethereum ETFs, and this filing is a proposal rather than a green light.
