Brazil Delays Big Crypto Transfers to Combat Fraud
Brazil's central bank is introducing new regulations to reduce fraud in cryptocurrency transactions. Starting January 1, 2027, certain transfers above $10,000 will be held for up to 24 hours before they can be completed.
The measure applies to transfers involving cryptocurrencies and stablecoins, including those sent to foreign virtual asset platforms or self-custody wallets. The threshold can be assessed based on an individual transaction or the total amount transferred by a customer during a single day.
The 24-hour delay is designed to give service providers additional time to assess transactions and determine whether they present unusual or suspicious characteristics. This approach adds a pause between the movement of funds and the final execution of certain transactions, allowing regulators to identify potentially high-risk transfers.
