California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 2409 on September 27, banning state and local public officials from issuing meme coins. The law takes effect on January 1, 2027.

The ban applies to state and local elected or appointed officials, as well as government employees with decision-making power over bids and contracts.

Newson tied the law to concerns about politicians earning money from digital assets, specifically pointing to President Donald Trump's meme coin. He cited reports that nearly one million TRUMP buyers lost more than $3 billion combined.
