Canadian Banks Unite on Tokenized Deposits Initiative
Canada's six largest banks have joined forces to explore using digital tokens for deposit transfers between institutions. The initiative, led by TD Bank, includes Bank of Montreal, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, National Bank of Canada, Royal Bank of Canada, Scotiabank, and TD Bank Group.
The project focuses on tokenizing bank deposits in Canadian dollars, allowing for efficient transfer of funds between participating banks. This is not a stablecoin issued by a crypto company, but rather a representation of existing bank deposits.
The goal is to keep customer funds within the regulated banking system and enable faster payments while maintaining regulatory oversight and financial stability. The initiative will also explore connecting with other digital asset initiatives in the future.
