CFTC Seeks Input on Retail Crypto Rules Framework
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has launched a 60-day public comment period on a proposed framework for retail crypto commodity transactions. This move marks the start of a rulemaking process that could significantly impact how crypto businesses operate in the U.S.
The CFTC is seeking input on rules under the Commodity Exchange Act, including a dedicated registration category for crypto asset exchanges handling covered transactions. The proposal also addresses abusive practices and aims to clarify compliance expectations for businesses.
The notice is an early step in the process and does not represent a final rule. The comment period will close 60 days after the notice is published in the Federal Register.
CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig encouraged entrepreneurs to 'Build here' during remarks at a Fordham University symposium in New York. He emphasized the agency's goal of protecting customers from fraud while providing a regulatory path for crypto businesses serving U.S. customers.
