Citi and Coinbase Connect Traditional Banking with Blockchain Payments

Share

Citi and Coinbase have joined forces to bridge traditional banking infrastructure with blockchain-based payment systems. The partnership introduces two initiatives in the United States, aimed at connecting corporate and institutional clients with fiat and stablecoin payments.

The first initiative, Coinbase Virtual Accounts, uses Citi's Virtual Account Wallet solution to provide bank-account-like functionality for Coinbase's payments customers. Incoming fiat funds are automatically converted into stablecoins within the system.

The second initiative enables Citi's institutional clients to accept stablecoin payments at checkout through Spring by Citi, the bank's payment acceptance platform. Coinbase Payments powers the stablecoin acceptance layer, while Citi converts the digital currency into fiat and settles funds as the bank of record.

Clients such as e-commerce companies will be able to serve stablecoin holders without directly holding or managing digital assets.
