CLARITY Act Fails Amid Ethics Disputes, But Cryptocurrency Remains Unfazed

The CLARITY Act, a landmark digital-assets bill, failed to advance in the Senate due to disagreements over ethics and enforcement. The legislation aimed to create a framework for determining how digital assets are classified, issued, traded, and supervised.

However, the bill's failure does not necessarily mean that cryptocurrency has no future in the United States. Bitcoin, in particular, is not dependent on Congress for its existence or survival. It continues to trade regardless of the outcome.

The decisive obstacle was ethics. Democrats argued that stronger restrictions were needed to prevent a president or federal officials from shaping policies that could increase their own financial interests. Trump agreed to some concessions but ultimately, the differences were not resolved before the vote.

Community banks feared that rewards offered through stablecoin platforms could draw deposits away from traditional institutions, while crypto companies described those rewards as competition and innovation. Critics also questioned whether the bill offered adequate safeguards against fraud, money laundering, market manipulation, and foreign financial influence.
