CLARITY Act Stalls in Senate as August Recess Deadline Looms
The U.S. Senate's agenda for the week ahead has raised fresh concerns about the fate of the CLARITY Act, a bill aimed at providing regulatory clarity to the digital asset market.
Crypto advocates are urging lawmakers to pass the legislation before they break for their August recess on August 10. However, former CFTC Chairman Chris Giancarlo has cautioned against treating the bill as an all-or-nothing moment, saying that blockchain innovation will continue regardless of its fate.
Giancarlo acknowledged that the bill contains valuable provisions, including the reauthorization of LabCFTC, which he launched during his tenure at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. He also suggested that every U.S. financial regulator should establish similar innovation centers to better understand emerging technologies.
The Senate's published agenda for Monday does not include the CLARITY Act, with lawmakers instead scheduled to vote on a spending bill. The omission has raised concerns about the bill's prospects, but Giancarlo warned that the industry should be prepared if Congress fails to pass it.
