Coinbase Clears CFTC Hurdle for Derivatives Clearing
Coinbase has secured approval from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to operate as a derivatives clearing organization, allowing it to manage the full process for regulated derivatives in-house. The company can now oversee product listing, customer brokerage, and post-trade clearing for fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps.
This approval marks an expansion of Coinbase's existing registrations as a futures commission merchant (FCM) and designated contract market (DCM). However, direct clearing will be limited to fully collateralized products, while margin derivatives that use leverage will continue to rely on third-party clearing partners.
Coinbase has stated that this approval will accelerate product development, improve operating efficiency, and provide flexibility for launching new regulated products in the future. The company can now create and settle fully collateralized contracts directly for the first time.
