Coinbase Gets CFTC Nod for In-House Derivatives Clearing

Coinbase has secured approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to operate its own clearing unit for eligible U.S. derivatives trades.

The registration, which took effect on September 28, allows Coinbase Clearing LLC to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps without relying on a third-party clearing organization.

This move expands Coinbase's regulated derivatives infrastructure and paves the way for the company to handle clearing for eligible trades directly. A partnership with Nodal Clear announced in June 2025 plans to offer futures collateralized with USDC.
