Coinbase Stock Trades Flat After Senate Fails to Advance Clarity Act
Coinbase Global Inc.'s stock traded flat on Wednesday morning after dropping by 10% on Tuesday. The decline was sparked by the U.S. Senate's failure to advance the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, a bipartisan legislation aimed at establishing a federal market structure for digital assets.
The bill would have formally divided oversight responsibilities between the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), providing much-needed clarity for digital asset operators. However, the Senate procedural cloture motion fell short of the 60-vote threshold required to bring the CLARITY Act to a full floor debate.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong described the outcome as 'disappointing' but stated that regulatory advancement would move forward through existing channels. He noted that the SEC and CFTC have the tools they need to create clear rules under existing authority, and he expects them to begin working on this in earnest.
