Consensys Security Incident: No MetaMask Funds Affected, Says Lubin
Consensys, the company behind the popular Ethereum wallet MetaMask, has suffered a security incident that has left some wondering if user funds are at risk. However, in a statement, Consensys founder Joseph Lubin has assured users that no MetaMask wallets or customer funds have been affected.
Lubin explained that the incident was related to the company's infrastructure, but that the investigation so far has shown no indication that user funds were compromised. He noted that user recovery phrases and private keys were not involved in the incident.
As a precaution, Consensys and its partners rotated validator keys, which Lubin described as 'operationally inconvenient.' However, he emphasized that the validator and withdrawal keys are separate, and that the incident could not have caused unauthorized transfers of staked ETH.
Lubin also highlighted the importance of self-custody in Ethereum, explaining that Consensys does not hold withdrawal keys for its clients, in line with the Ethereum principle of self-custody. He noted that this design principle is central to the security of the Ethereum network.
