Crypto Attacks Surge to Record High in August Despite Lower Losses
Crypto attacks reached an all-time high in August 2026, with 50 major hacks reported by PeckShield. This is a 67% increase from July's 30 incidents and the highest monthly total so far this year. However, despite the surge in attack frequency, combined losses fell 49.5% to approximately $136.3 million.
The average loss per incident dropped to around $2.7 million in August, compared to about $9 million in July. This suggests that attackers were successful more often but generally walked away with smaller amounts.
The largest exploit in August was Tectonic, the largest lending protocol on Cronos, which reportedly lost around $74 million. This accounted for over half of all crypto losses recorded during August and ranks as the fourth-largest crypto theft so far this year.
