Crypto Industry Grapples with Uneven Access to Cutting-Edge Cyber Models
Crypto security leaders are facing a challenge as attackers increasingly use cutting-edge AI-assisted capabilities to exploit vulnerabilities, while many major crypto firms still lack direct access to the most powerful cyber models.
According to reports, Coinbase has secured access to Anthropic's restricted Mythos model, and Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox stated that Anthropic used Mythos to help audit the Zcash protocol at the request of Shielded Labs. However, other large players like Binance have publicly indicated they do not have similar access.
The uneven rollout is significant because the cyber threat landscape is moving faster than traditional security review cycles. With vulnerabilities being exploited rapidly, often with automated or semi-automated assistance, having fewer defensive options can translate into slower discovery and patching.
Binance chief security officer Jimmy Su stated that the exchange has been trying to obtain access to these tools, including conversations with other crypto exchanges and investors, but it has not obtained the most advanced model like Mythos. Su suggested that controlled rollout can reduce the 'blast radius', especially early on, but argued that the justification changes as competing models become more powerful and widely available.
Crypto-adjacent firms like FIS have already gained access to restricted frontier cyber models through Anthropic's Project Glasswing program, which is designed for vetted cyber defenders and critical software infrastructure organizations. However, many crypto players appear to be waiting, highlighting an emerging 'security divide' within the industry.
