Crypto Regulatory Framework Stalls in Senate, Future Uncertain
The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, a 635-page regulatory framework for the crypto industry, has stalled in the Senate. Despite its comprehensive nature and broad coalition of supporters, the bill failed to advance due to the approaching midterms. With key senators retiring, the bill's prospects for revival before the end of the year are slim.
The Clarity Act aimed to establish a framework for market structure, categorizing crypto tokens, licensing trading firms, and dividing supervisory authority between the SEC and CFTC. Its proponents argue that it would have unlocked crypto's potential for financial inclusion and reduced cross-border payment costs.
However, regulated institutions have hesitated to invest due to the lack of clear rules, and everyday Americans have little reason to trust a market without oversight. The bill's defeat is particularly exasperating given that the hardest part of the regulatory framework had already been resolved.
