Crypto's Growing Role in Portfolios: Bitcoin's Volatile Path to Mainstream Acceptance
Bitcoin's wild ride has left many wondering if it's found its place in the portfolio sun. After topping $126,000 in October 2025 and plummeting to half that by June, the cryptocurrency is now surging again, reaching over $84,000. Despite its volatility, crypto adoption among advisors is growing, with 42% of independent RIAs reporting allocation to crypto in client portfolios last year, up from 28% the previous year.
Roughly $2.7 billion has flowed into BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) in the past month, a sign of continued investor demand. Some advisors see meaningful opportunities in digital assets, while others remain skeptical. Amy Arnott, portfolio strategist at Morningstar, notes that most advisors are still cautious due to price stability concerns.
Bitcoin's high-return potential is undeniable, having surged roughly 14,000% over the past decade, vastly outpacing the S&P 500's 300% total return. However, its volatility is a major concern, with a 74% drop in 2018 alone. Mark Stancato, founder of VIP Wealth Advisors, views this as part of the appeal and typically allocates about 5% to digital assets.
Kevin Feig, founder of Walk You to Wealth, recommends going further, suggesting an 8% to 15% bitcoin allocation where appropriate. He sees bitcoin as a scarce asset with historically low long-term correlation with stocks, bonds, and gold, giving it diversification potential. Nathan Nicolaisen, founder of Redspire Wealth Management, is more cautious, citing the speculative nature and difficulty in evaluating bitcoin's drivers.
