DogeOS Unveils Ethereum-Compatible DeFi Testnet for Dogecoin
DogeOS has launched a public Ethereum-compatible Dogecoin DeFi testnet, aiming to establish a genuine use case beyond simple trading for the internet's most famous memecoin. The testnet allows developers to build trading, lending, and stablecoin tools using test DOGE, reducing the barrier for teams already familiar with building DeFi apps elsewhere.
Transaction fees on the network are covered by test DOGE rather than real coins, signaling the direction the live version would eventually take. This could reframe what Dogecoin can offer holders, allowing them to lend, borrow, or trade their DOGE directly.
The new infrastructure relies on trusted operators for now, but plans to shift to relying on Dogecoin miners through a proposed upgrade called OP_CHECKZKP, which is still in draft form. The upgrade would allow computers on the network to check proofs for calculations performed elsewhere, pulling miners directly into the security model.
According to Jordan Jefferson, founder of DogeOS and team behind MyDoge wallet, 'No other digital asset has Dogecoin's combination of liquidity, community, and cultural reach, and its potential has barely been tapped. With DogeOS, developers can finally build applications on Dogecoin, and with MyDoge, they will be able to put those apps in front of users from day one.'
The launch comes as a response to the weak demand for DOGE seen after Bitwise announced it would close its dogecoin ETF. The team is trying to position itself to build a stronger case for institutional demand.
