ECB Invites Companies to Test AI-Driven Digital Euro Payments
The European Central Bank (ECB) is pushing forward its digital euro project by inviting fintech companies and payment firms to test AI-driven payments. The initiative, which starts in January 2027, aims to build prototypes of features that the digital euro could offer one day.
These features include digital receipts, payments involving a lot of people, and payments that only go through when certain conditions are met. Some participants will also work on how the digital euro looks and feels on the user's end.
The second part of the project focuses on the long game, with workshops in the first half of 2027 exploring AI-driven payments, micropayments, and machines paying each other without a human in the loop. Some participants will be selected to present their work at the ECB's headquarters in Frankfurt.
The ECB President Christine Lagarde reportedly blocked Binance from getting its MiCA license, citing concerns that crypto exchanges are pushing people toward dollar-backed stablecoins, which could hurt the digital euro before it even launches.
