Ethereum Blob Usage Hits Record High as Rollup Demand Surges

Ethereum's blob usage has reached an all-time high as rollup demand continues to surge. According to data, the three-day moving average of blobs per block stands at 5.9, while the daily average is a record 6.7.

This significant increase in blob usage indicates strong demand for Ethereum's data availability layer, even though current activity remains well below the protocol's full capacity. The 14-blob target is only being used to about 40-50%, leaving substantial unused capacity despite the growth in rollup activity.

The developers are considering increasing the blob limit again, this time towards a 21-blob target and 32-blob maximum. However, this would come with increased bandwidth requirements and higher operational costs for Ethereum client teams, which currently face funding constraints.
