Ethereum's Future: From Blockchain to Hybrid Architecture
Ethereum's co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined his vision for the network by 2030, and it's a far cry from what we see today. In an essay titled 'The cryptographic world computer,' he explains that Ethereum will no longer be just a blockchain, but rather a hybrid architecture combining blockchains with modern cryptography.
The five key changes Buterin proposes include verifying instead of re-executing data, aggregated signatures, distributed block building, privacy as a default through zero-knowledge proofs, and parallel access to state. He aims for significant reductions in latency, targeting 4-8 seconds per block by 2030, and finality from several minutes to 8-32 seconds.
Buterin's plan also addresses the criticism that Ethereum has outsourced scaling to Layer 2 networks like Arbitrum, Base, and Optimism. He envisions bringing scaling back to the base layer without sacrificing decentralization, which is made possible by infrastructure built around Ethereum.
