Ethereum's Record Rally Faces Volatility and Exit Queue Challenges
Ethereum (ETH) outpaced Bitcoin (BTC) in the third quarter of 2026, with a 71% surge compared to Bitcoin's 44% gain. Despite this strong performance, ETH remains 45% below its all-time high of $4,946. As of October 6, 2026, ETH is trading at $2,713, still about 40% down from the previous year.
Two notable trends are shaping the Ethereum landscape. The exit queue for staking has reached its highest level of the year, with approximately 843,000 ETH, valued at around $2.3 billion, waiting to exit. However, this represents only about 2% of all staked ETH, as validators have staked around 43.7 million ETH, or 36% of the total supply.
On the other hand, the entry queue for staking is even larger, with about 1.42 million ETH waiting to start staking. This indicates stronger demand to stake than to flee, as the wait time for entry exceeds three weeks. The thinning order books for ETH compared to BTC also amplify volatility, suggesting that the same selling pressure that drove prices up could trigger sharper drops.
The current situation highlights the need for caution. While the exit queue is substantial, many exiting ETH may not enter exchanges immediately but could shift to new providers instead. The thinner order books contribute to increased volatility, making sharp price swings more likely. The situation could change if a significant portion of the exiting ETH shows up in exchange wallets, potentially heightening selling pressure.
