Filecoin Price Jumps 12% Ahead of Vesting End
The price of Filecoin's native token, FIL, surged by 12% on Monday, October 5, without any clear news driving the rally. The most significant move occurred at 18:00 UTC on Binance, where FIL jumped from $1.0893 to $1.1554 in just one hour, with trading volume hitting $2.1 million. Bitcoin and Ethereum saw minimal gains during the same period, while other related tokens like Arweave and Render also posted modest increases. By the end of the day, FIL had risen 11.8% from its opening price.
Despite the sharp increase, no specific news event seemed to trigger the rally. Filecoin's social media posts around that time did not provide an immediate explanation. One post discussed the storage of AI job outputs through the Synapse SDK, and another detailed pricing for the Warm Storage Service. Derivatives activity also increased, with Binance's perpetual open interest rising to $65.7 million, up from the previous week's range of $52 million to $54 million.
The broader context for this price movement is the upcoming end of Filecoin's vesting program on October 15. This event, announced in early September, is expected to reduce gross issuance by roughly 75%. The vesting program, which distributes about 66.7 million FIL annually, will conclude, leaving only block rewards adding approximately 22 million FIL per year. Simulations suggest that this change could significantly reduce daily net supply growth, potentially leading to more FIL leaving circulation than entering it.
From a technical perspective, FIL has been on a strong upward trend since August, nearly doubling from its low of $0.6095. The price has encountered resistance near the 50-week exponential moving average (EMA) at $1.227. Key levels to watch include a potential breakthrough above $1.2110, which could target the May high of $1.3240, or a drop below $1.1443, which might see the price retest support levels around $1.0839 and $1.0426.
