Fiserv Brings Stablecoin Settlement to Solana Blockchain
Fiserv, a leading payments giant, has launched a stablecoin settlement on the Solana blockchain. The stablecoin, called Roughrider Coin, is designed for interbank payments and is being used by over 90 North Dakota banks and credit unions. This marks the first production stablecoin deployment on Fiserv's system, which is live with financial institution clients. The coin settles interbank transactions on Solana and is accessible through Commercial Center, Fiserv's commercial online banking system.
Roughrider Coin is issued by VersaBank, which is responsible for minting, burning, custody, and reserve asset management within a nationally regulated framework. Fireblocks provides the digital asset infrastructure and tokenization services. The announcement does not provide details on the reserve composition, redemption terms, or access restrictions for the token.
The use of a stablecoin on a public blockchain is a significant development, as it gives Solana a role in Fiserv's platform. However, it is unclear whether Solana will become a major source of stablecoin liquidity. Fiserv's platform also targets corporates, marketplaces, and fintechs, with potential use cases including stablecoin card issuance, cross-border payments, and programmable commerce.
The first measurable test for Roughrider Coin will be its adoption by the participating institutions. Without disclosed volumes, transaction counts, or settlement costs, it is unclear whether the coin will gain traction. The announcement highlights the growing use of stablecoins in the payments industry, but the scale of Solana's payment demand remains unclear.
