Glamsterdam Delay Slips Ethereum's Next Major Upgrade to Late 2026
Ethereum's next major upgrade, Glamsterdam, has been delayed until late 2026, forcing developers to scramble and adjust their roadmap for 2027. The original timeline had Glamsterdam targeting the first half of 2026, with Hegotá following later in the year.
Developers have launched a new public testnet called Platåberget, which will run for several months before moving to Ethereum's Sepolia and Hoodi testnets. This testing is crucial as Glamsterdam introduces breaking changes that require updates for tools like wallets, indexers, and gas estimators.
The Ethereum Foundation has narrowed the number of proposals for Hegotá, with only a fraction expected to receive implementation work and be included in the upgrade. FOCIL (EIP-7805) is currently confirmed as the consensus-layer headliner, while Frame Transactions (EIP-8141) remains under consideration.
Ethlabs, an independent Ethereum research lab, has begun making its case for what should survive the cut. The group recommends keeping Hegotá tightly scoped and rejecting several proposals now under consideration, including EIP-8375 and EIP-8182.
