Hegota Fork Signals Shift Towards Scalable, Private, and Secure Ethereum

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has stated that the network's next hard fork, Hegota, will likely be its last 'normal' upgrade. In a recent essay, Buterin wrote that Hegota, planned for next year, will be Ethereum's last fork with features and technology recognizable to someone in 2015.

According to Buterin, everything after Hegota will involve advanced technologies such as recursive STARKs, automated formal verification, highly optimized consensus algorithms, and quantum-safe signatures. This marks a significant shift from the current design, which he describes as a 'cryptographic world computer'. The goal is to create a more scalable, private, and secure architecture that combines blockchain technology with cryptographic privacy and verification.

Buterin's vision for Ethereum's future design includes a proof-of-stake consensus algorithm with few-slot finality, allowing for faster transaction processing times. He also proposes the use of PeerDAS (Peer Discovery and Synchronization) to sample data and verify SNARK proofs, enabling light clients to directly verify both data availability and computation.

The essay highlights the significant changes that will occur in Ethereum's design over the next few years. While some components are still in research or early implementation, Buterin emphasizes the importance of this transition in creating a more efficient and secure network.
