HSBC Unveils Plans for Hong Kong Dollar Stablecoin RedCoin

Share

HSBC is planning to launch a Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin called RedCoin in the second half of 2026. The token will be pegged to the Hong Kong dollar at a one-to-one ratio and backed by high-quality liquid assets, according to Coin Bureau.

The initial rollout of RedCoin will focus on payment-related use cases, allowing customers to use the token for peer-to-peer transfers and merchant payments through PayMe and the HSBC Hong Kong app. This approach aims to integrate the stablecoin into existing banking products rather than requiring customers to access it through a separate cryptocurrency application.

Following its initial launch, HSBC plans to expand RedCoin's use into corporate treasury operations, wholesale payments, and settlement involving tokenized assets. This expansion reflects a broader trend of using digital representations of fiat currencies within payment and settlement systems.
