India Voices Concerns Over US Legislation Targeting Russia's Energy Trade
India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met with a bipartisan US Congressional delegation led by House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast. During their meeting, which took place on Sunday, Misri conveyed India's concerns over the 'Lindsey O Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026' (SRIA). The legislation could have implications for bilateral ties and the international energy market.
The SRIA targets Russia's energy trade and countries purchasing Russian oil and gas. It provides a statutory framework for expanded sanctions, import duties, and trade restrictions concerning Russia, as well as extended economic measures relating to Iran.
India is assessing the implications of US legislation targeting Russia's energy trade, particularly since it creates a potential mechanism for Washington to impose tariffs on imports from countries purchasing Russian energy. The executive branch has authority to impose tariffs under specified conditions.
