Institutional Executives Majority Now Expect Crypto Mainstream Adoption Within Five Years
State Street Corporation's fifth annual Digital Assets Study, released on October 6, 2026, reveals a significant shift in institutional attitudes toward digital assets. The survey of 300 senior executives in asset and wealth management found that 51% now expect digital assets to reach mainstream adoption within five years. This marks a sharp rise from 42% in 2025 and just 11% in 2024.
The study highlights that respondents currently allocate about 11% of their portfolios to digital assets, with expectations to increase this to 17% over the next three years. Tokenization emerged as a top strategic priority for 52% of respondents, driven by anticipated cost reductions and efficiency gains. Additionally, 35% of executives already manage or distribute digital assets, while 28% have built the necessary infrastructure to meet client demand.
Regulatory compliance stands out as a critical factor, with 69% of respondents prioritizing experience with regulatory frameworks when choosing a digital asset service provider. Cybersecurity (54%) and financial strength (47%) followed closely as key requirements. The study underscores the growing emphasis on operational resilience and digital cash solutions in the asset management sector.
State Street's findings reflect a rapid evolution in institutional perceptions of digital assets. The projected increase in allocation and the focus on tokenization signal a broader acceptance and integration of these assets into traditional financial services. However, the study also underscores the challenges posed by regulatory and security concerns, which could shape the future trajectory of digital asset adoption.
