Institutions Flock to Open-Source Infrastructure and Hybrid Stacks
The Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust has released its 2026 Institutional Adoption Report, which maps 80 institutional platforms using LFDT technologies. This report distinguishes between live production and documented paths toward implementation, filtering out speculative pilots and announcements with no follow-through.
The report tracks infrastructure tied to some of the largest names in global finance, including DTCC, Euroclear, Clearstream, Swift, Citi, HSBC, and BNP Paribas. Central banks and BIS-led initiatives also appear throughout the research.
Nearly 30% of institutional blockchain platforms that disclose their technology now run on LFDT projects, with three of the largest central bank projects using LFDT technologies. Three of the five largest globally systemic banks also rely on LFDT projects.
Several public crypto networks are mentioned in the report, including Hedera, Canton, Ethereum, Avalanche, Polygon, Algorand, Stellar, and Linea. However, each network plays a specific role based on settlement needs, privacy requirements, or existing institutional relationships.
