Iran Rejects Omani Proposal to Control Strait of Hormuz Shipping

The Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway that handles around 20% of the world's oil supply daily, has plunged into a diplomatic crisis. Iran rejected an Omani proposal on July 11, 2026, to establish two separately controlled shipping corridors through the strait, insisting instead on a single joint management framework shared between Iran and Oman.

Tehran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi pushed back on the idea, emphasizing that Iran wants structural control over the strait's management, not just a seat at the table alongside its neighbor. This stance has significant implications for shipping companies and their insurers, as it creates a fundamentally different risk environment than a bilateral corridor arrangement administered by Oman.

The breakdown in negotiations is particularly concerning given the recent memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran, which established a 60-day window of toll-free navigation for commercial vessels. This temporary ceasefire has not held cleanly, with at least five commercial vessels attacked since the MOU was signed. Shipping traffic through the corridor remains well below normal levels as of mid-July 2026.
