Lagarde Blocks Binance EU Entry Amid Dollar Stablecoin Concerns

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has reportedly blocked Binance's entry into the European Union. According to a Wall Street Journal report, Lagarde intervened at a critical moment when Binance was on the cusp of operating in the trading bloc.

Binance does not have a MiCA license, which is required under EU law for Crypto-Asset Service Providers (CASP). The exchange withdrew its application in Greece in June. Lagarde has been vocal about her concerns regarding cryptocurrencies, calling Bitcoin 'a highly speculative asset' used for money laundering and criticizing central banks for holding it.

Lagarde's stance on central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) is different. She views them as key to Europe's financial autonomy and sees CBDCs as a means of countering privately issued stablecoins, such as dollar-based ones that are popular on Binance.
