Marathon Digital Holdings Bolsters Bitcoin Reserves with $175M Purchase
Marathon Digital Holdings (MARA), a publicly listed Bitcoin miner, has made two significant purchases of BTC in recent months. In June 2026, MARA quietly acquired 1,000 BTC through FalconX, an institutional prime broker, for around $76,347 per coin. This purchase was not announced by the company at the time but is now known due to on-chain analytics from Lookonchain.
The second major purchase was made in September 2026, when MARA bought 1,292 BTC through FalconX again. This time, the purchase was valued at roughly $98.6 million, with each coin costing about $76,347. The June and September purchases suggest that MARA's sell-heavy posture earlier this year may have been transitional rather than permanent.
Marathon Digital Holdings sold a substantial portion of its Bitcoin reserves in Q1 2026, selling approximately 20,880 BTC for around $1.5 billion. This sale reduced the company's holdings by more than a third, from around 53,822 BTC at the end of 2025 to about 35,303 BTC by March 2026.
As of early 2026 filings, MARA's Bitcoin treasury was valued between $2.4 billion and $2.7 billion, depending on market prices. This places MARA among the largest corporate Bitcoin holders in the world, occasionally trading the title with MicroStrategy.
