Midnight is preparing to deploy smart contract support on its mainnet, according to Sebastien Guillemo, the CTO of Midnight Foundation. This move will enable private smart contracts and allow anyone to experiment with and deploy them.

The blockchain, which runs as a sidechain to Cardano, uses zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs for its underlying privacy architecture. This has made it attractive to institutional players seeking on-chain solutions, with the ability to mint private tokens being a major draw.

Guillemo noted that the next version of smart contracts will come with extra features, including events and composability. This will enable the development of DeFi apps that can communicate with each other, allowing for complex applications like the Aave lending protocol.
