Petrobras and Cardano Build Blockchain Trackers for Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Diesel R
Petrobras and the Cardano Foundation have developed two research-stage blockchain applications to track environmental claims for sustainable aviation fuel and lifecycle data for Diesel R renewable diesel. The projects, announced on September 30, 2026, were built with PUC-Rio's Ledger Labs through their ongoing research collaboration with Brazil's state-controlled energy company.
The first project uses a Book-and-Claim model to tokenize environmental benefits tied to sustainable aviation fuel (CS-SAF tokens). This means that an airline can receive the environmental benefit of using SAF even if another operator uses the physical fuel. The certificates are checked against CORSIA and other recognized standards before becoming standardized tokens carrying environmental attributes.
The second project records production, transportation, and use data for Diesel R renewable diesel, focusing on Scope 3 emissions reporting. Digital checkpoints collect information at successive stages of production, transportation, and use to build a fuel history that companies can consult when preparing emissions accounts.
