Pham Calls on SEC and CFTC to Use Existing Authority to Clarify Crypto Rules
Crypto regulation in the US is still a topic of debate, and one key figure believes existing agencies already have the authority to establish clearer rules for digital assets. At Korea Blockchain Week, Caroline Pham said reviewing the mandates of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) could identify the legal basis for regulating digital-asset markets.
The comments from Pham come as Congress debates the role of the CFTC in overseeing digital assets. Leadership vacancies at both agencies remain part of the broader US crypto policy debate, with the CFTC led by Chair Michael Selig as its sole commissioner since Pham left in December 2022.
Congress is considering legislation that would give the CFTC a larger role in digital-asset oversight. The Digital Asset Clarity Act failed in the Senate, but this development shows lawmakers are still working to clarify the regulatory environment for crypto assets.
